A bit vile but still: if you don't want a new job but think that you may want one in the future apply without the intent of jumping the current ship. First, you need practice, second, you may find out that life is more complex than your mental model of it.

Agreed, for all the reasons you cited. And I don't even think this practice is "vile", as long as you're honest with everyone involved!

You can honestly say to your current manager "I don't expect anything to come of it, but as an FYI, I'm interviewing occasionally so I know what's out there."

You can honestly say to the interviewer "I generally enjoy my current role, but I'm also interested in $desirableFeatureOfThisCompany so I'd like to learn more about this new role."

I was afraid for a moment -- just a moment -- that you were serious about not having footnotes.

I certainly prefer the longer articles, but having these nuggets sprinkled in provides a nice bit of variety that is quite refreshing. And inspiring, in this case.
